Dr.
Montessori saw the fifth year in a child's life
as being one following the stage called the
absorbent mind, where the child is constantly
building his/her own self as a person independent
from others. In the next stage from six to twelve
the child develops social values, finding where
he/she fits within a global, interdependent
world.
The
Full-Day Program allows the 5 year old to do
the following things:
.
•
Actua lize his/her potential academically because
of the length of time at school.
•
Ability to do more challenging work due to the
exposure in the full day.
•
Acquire ability to do in-depth research in cultural
areas.
•
Fulfill the need of perfecting work with cultural
subjects, reading, writing, math, and fine arts.
•
Develop maturity due to responsibilities given
them.
•
Examples: lunchroom experience, playground
experience, all day field trips.
•
Allows time, within the Montessori classroom,
to make a transition from primary level to junior
level.
•
Allows time to participate in other programs
with the rest of the school such as gymnastics
and
•
skating. The purpose is to develop large
and small muscles, body awareness and control.
•
Participate in a weekly physical education class
in the school gym.
